Diagnosis Code Mesh Erosion

Mesh Erosion Diagnosis Codes

A diagnostic code is used in the healthcare field in order to categorize medical disorders, diseases, and injuries. The International Statistical Classification of Diseases, also known as the ICD-9 or ICD-9-CM , is currently used as the universal tool for medical diagnosis using signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances, and external causes. In the 2013 edition of the ICD-9, transvaginal mesh erosion is given the diagnostic code 629.31.

The ICD-9-CM has vaginal mesh in the following subcategories:

  • Diseases of the Genitourinary System
  • Complications of Implanted vaginal mesh and other prosthetic materials
  • Other Disorder of Female Genital Tract
  • Other Disorders of Female Genital Organs

Many women experience vaginal mesh erosion following their initial surgery for pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence. Numerous vaginal mesh erosion lawsuits have been filed in response to the growing number of mesh erosion injuries and complications.

Vaginal Mesh Erosion

In 2011, the United States FDA named the protrusion or extrusion of a surgical mesh device through the vaginal walls the most frequently reported injury following treatment for POP (pelvic organ prolapse). The most common signs of vaginal mesh erosion include: severe pelvic pain and an inability to have sexual intercourse. Sometimes mesh can fully protrude outside the vagina, resulting in organ perforation. Additionally, some women report that mesh extrusion results in bleeding, discharge, abscesses, and infections. When a woman experiences mesh erosion, she will most likely require at least one revision surgery in order to treat the symptoms leading to her diagnosis of mesh erosion.

Mesh Erosion Diagnosis Codes

In the ICD-9-CM, vaginal mesh erosion is described as the "erosion of implanted vaginal mesh and other prosthetic materials to surrounding organ or tissue, initial encounter" or "eros imp vag mesh in tis" for short. The numerical diagnosis code is: 629.31, and this code is used for medical billing and insurance claims as well as the initial diagnosis of this condition. According to the ICD-9-CM, this erosion can occur into the pelvic floor muscles and/or surrounding organs and tissues. The following diagnosis code isalso due to mesh related injuries:
619.32 Exposure of vaginal mesh and other prosthetic materials through vaginal wall
