Mesh Erosion and TVT
The tension-free transvaginal tape, also referred to using the acronym TVT, is a urogynecologic procedure typically used in the treatment of women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In TVT surgery, a polypropylene mesh tape sling is positioned underneath the patient's urethra in order to provide additional support for the organ and increase bladder control. Typically, the TVT procedure can be performed in around 20 minutes as an outpatient treatment option. However, a variety of complications including mesh erosion have been reported after TVT treatment by thousands of women. In addition to TVT, the transobturator tape (TOT), mini-sling, and transvaginal pelvic mesh have also been linked to mesh erosion and other serious complications by the United States Food and Drug Administration, prompting the release of multiple mesh erosion safety communications.
TVT Mesh Erosion and other Complications
The complications that can occur following TVT treatment for stress urinary incontinence are both numerous and diverse. Surgical mesh is used in a number of urogynecologic procedures and is often referred to as pelvic mesh, vaginal mesh, transvaginal mesh, or sometimes simply "mesh." It can be comprised of a variety of porous and non porous, biologic and synthetic materials. The erosion or protrusion of surgical mesh through the vaginal wall is one of the most common complaints following surgical treatment with mesh. A woman experiencing TVT mesh erosion will usually complain of severe pelvic pain, bleeding, discharge, and/or an inability to have sexual intercourse. Other complications after TVT or transvaginal mesh treatment include organ perforation, neuromuscular difficulties, reoccurrence of urinary problems, vaginal scarring/shrinkage, and even emotional problems. Complications following SUI and pelvic organ prolapse mesh treatment are "not rare" according to an FDA safety communication published in 2011.
TVT Mesh Erosion in the Media
In 2009, The New York Times published a story that covered the experience of several women who were suffering from mesh erosion following treatment for stress urinary incontinence with pelvic mesh slings. One of the women in the article had already undergone five revision surgeries following her initial treatment, but was still suffering from mesh erosion complications that greatly impacted her daily life. The story focused on a device released by Mentor Corporation called ObTape, but at this time the FDA has acknowledged that mesh injuries cannot be linked to a single brand or mesh device.Presently, all of the following companies and devices are in question:
Johnson & Johnson: Ethicon TVT, Gynecare Prolift, Gynecare Prosima, Gynecare TVT, Gynemesh PS
C.R. Bard: Avaulta PlusT BioSynthetic Support, Avaulta SoloT Synthetic Support, Faslata Allograft, PelvitexT Polypropylene Mesh, Pelvicol Tissue, PelviSoft Biomesh
