Mesh Erosion Diagnosis Code

Mesh Erosion Dx Code

The dx code (short for diagnostic code) is a specific number assigned to a disease, disorder, or injury. This number is determined based on a series of increasingly more specific categories to which a condition belongs. All of the dx codes belong to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, also known as the ICD-9-CM or ICD 9 because it is currently in the ninth edition.

Mesh erosion, referred to as "the erosion of implanted vaginal mesh and other prosthetic materials to surrounding organ or tissue, initial encounter" by the ICD-9, is assigned the dx code 629.32 and is the most frequent and consistently reported mesh injury. Even with a diagnosis, mesh erosion can be extremely difficult and expensive to treat. This has resulted in the filing of many lawsuits against the manufacturers of these products.

Transvaginal Mesh Implants and Erosion

The phrases "mesh," "vaginal mesh," "pelvic mesh," and "transvaginal mesh" refer to the placement of a surgical mesh device in the pelvic region for the treat either pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence. Surgery with transvaginal mesh can have serious complications, and has not demonstrated any additional benefits when compared with other "non-mesh" treatments.

Erosion can occur with all of the following products:

  • Transvaginal Mesh to Treat POP
  • Transabdominal Mesh to treat POP
  • Mesh Sling to Treat SUI

The dx code for mesh erosion refers to the wearing down of the pelvic floor as well as any other surrounding organs or tissue by a surgical mesh device. Erosion with vaginal mesh requires a revision surgery in order to remove the mesh implant. Unfortunately, mesh devices can continue breaking apart into increasingly smaller pieces, making the full removal and alleviation of painful symptoms nearly impossible.

Additional Pelvic Mesh FDA Complications:

In addition to mesh erosion (also called exposure and protrusion), the United States Food and Drug Administration has received adverse event reports regarding several other mesh-related complaints:

  • Pain
  • Vaginal Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Urinary Problems
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Vaginal Shrinkage
  • Recurrent Prolapse
  • Emotional Problems
  • Neuro-muscular problems
