IDC 9 Mesh Erosion

Mesh Erosion ICD-9

The International Statistical Classification of Diseases is a medical tool used by healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorders, and injuries. Each condition is given a numerical diagnosis code determined by its placement in a series of categories. Vaginal mesh erosion is listed in the 2013 edition of the ICD 9 as Diagnosis Code 629.31 based on the following classifications:

  • Diseases of the Genitourinary System (580-629)
  • Other Disorders of Female Genital Tract (617-629)
  • Other Disorders of Female Genital Organs (629-)

The formal description of pelvic mesh erosion is listed as "the erosion of implanted vaginal mesh and other prosthetic materials to surrounding organ or tissue, initial encounter" and can apply to the erosion of transvaginal mesh into pelvic floor muscles. The code 629.3 refers to all complications of implanted vaginal mesh and prosthetic materials, but requires a 5th digit in order to complete the diagnosis.

Vaginal Mesh Exposure ICD 9

In addition to mesh erosion, there is also a specific listing in the ICD 9 for vaginal mesh exposure, described as "the exposure of vaginal mesh and other prosthetic material into vagina, initial encounter" This vaginal mesh complication diagnosis code (as well as 629.31) is a billable medical code that can be used on a medical reimbursement claim.

Other Transvaginal Mesh Injuries

In addition to mesh exposure and mesh erosion, the FDA has received complaints regarding a number of other mesh-related complaints:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Organ Perforation
  • Urinary Problems
  • Emotional Problems
  • Neuro-muscular problems
  • 'Recurrent Prolapse
  • Vaginal Shrinkage
  • Vaginal Scarring

Many of these pelvic mesh complications will require hospitalization as well as additional surgery in order to treat. Because the injuries that can result from transvaginal placement of surgical mesh are severe and difficult to treat, many women decided to seek legal counsel and file a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the offending product.
