Mesh Erosion Surgery Options
In the last several years, the United States Food and Drug Administration has received thousands of complaints from women who were treated with vaginal mesh implants (also known as pelvic mesh and transvaginal mesh) for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Both of these conditions primarily affect women following their childbearing years and can occur as the result of tissue that has lost strength over time. Transvaginal mesh is typically implanted in order to augment and strengthen this tissue that has become weaker with age or following childbirth or another surgery. The complications that can follow pelvic mesh surgery include pain, organ perforation (bladder, bowels, or vaginal wall), infection, erosion of the implant through surrounding tissues, and even a reoccurrence of pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence symptoms.
What is Mesh Erosion?
Based on information supplied by the US Food and Drug Administration, transvaginal mesh erosion is the most frequently and consistently related complication. Erosion of the mesh through the vaginal wall is also referred to as mesh extrusion, exposure, and protrusion. All Symptoms of vaginal mesh erosion include pain, infection, and chronic discharge from the vagina.
Surgery for Mesh Erosion
Following the occurrence of mesh erosion, most women will require at least one vaginal mesh erosion revision surgery. This procedure is performed in an attempt to remove as much of the implant as possible and provide the woman with the best chance of recovery from her transvaginal mesh injuries. Unfortunately, many of these mesh erosion revision surgeries are not effective and additional procedures will be necessary. Additionally, sometimes the pelvic mesh implant will break apart into multiple smaller pieces making a complete removal of the mesh all but impossible.
