Mesh Erosion Symptoms

A recent release from the FDA warned patients that there are serious potential side effects and complications related to having a vaginal mesh implant for stress urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. The vaginal mesh is meant to fix those problems, but has been causing its own host of other problems which can be worse than the original symptoms.

Some common mesh erosion symptoms include constant infections, clear slimy discharge, bleeding, internal and external abscess and itching, and pain in the lower back. In many cases the mesh will have a negative reaction with the body, and the body may reject the transvaginal mesh leading to mesh erosion symptoms. Another mesh erosion symptom that is fairly common is pain during sexual intercourse. A list of other mesh erosion symptoms includes:

  • Vaginal tightness from sling not implanted correctly
  • Mesh erosion through the vaginal wall, urethra, bowel and bladder
  • Bleeding
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Bladder stones
  • Pain in thighs and bottom
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Voiding difficulties
  • Retropubic Haematom
  • Abscess
  • Swelling in the stomach
  • Allergic reaction to the mesh
  • Obturator nerve damage
  • Septicaemia
  • Shrinkage of the vagina caused from scar tissue

Surgery Required for Some Mesh Erosion Patients

In many cases where women experience severe mesh erosion symptoms, they are required to have surgery in order to remove the product. In some situations, removal of the vaginal mesh implant to halt mesh erosion symptoms can help, but sometimes it requires multiple surgeries. In certain cases, it has been reported that even after multiple surgeries, doctors are unable to remove all of the mesh. If this occurs, some women might experience mesh erosion symptoms indefinitely.
