Mesh Erosion Symptoms

Mesh Erosion Symptoms

Mesh erosion, or vaginal mesh erosion, has been named by the FDA as the most common and consistently reported mesh-related complication from all surgeries using pelvic mesh. The symptoms of this mesh erosion complication can include bleeding, infection, severe pelvic pain, as well as an inability to engage in sexual intercourse. Lawsuits have been filed by both the women who are suffering this harrowing medical issue as well as their husbands who frequently cite a loss of consortium as well as injuries to the penis.

The following are all names that can be used to describe the condition of mesh erosion:

  • Transvaginal Mesh Erosion
  • Transvaginal Mesh Extrusion
  • Transvaginal Mesh Exposure
  • Transvaginal Mesh Protrusion
  • Pelvic Mesh Erosion
  • Pelvic Mesh Exposure
  • Pelvic Extrusion
  • Pelvic Protrusion
  • Vaginal Mesh Erosion
  • Vaginal Mesh Exposure
  • Vaginal Mesh Extrusion
  • Vaginal Mesh Protrusion

What is Vaginal Mesh?

Vaginal mesh is a surgical device that is used by doctors in order to repair tissue that has become damaged or weakened. When used as transvaginal or pelvic mesh, this is typically to treat a condition known as pelvic organ prolapse, or POP. When a woman experiences POP, mesh is used to repair weakened pelvic tissue and prevent organs from prolapsing or sinking below their ideal positions. Vaginal mesh is also used to support the urethra in women who experience a condition called stress urinary incontinence, where they have unintentional bladder leakage during daily activities. Unfortunately, the use of pelvic mesh has led to a range of serious injuries as reported by the US Food and Drug Administration. Recently, the FDA reported that transvaginal mesh introduces new risks (without any corresponding benefits) when compared with other non-mesh treatment options.

Transvaginal Mesh Injuries

In 2011, the FDA identified another previously unidentified mesh complication as vaginal "mesh contraction." This pelvic mesh complication is usually associated with vaginal shortening, tightening, and severe pain. Sometimes scarring can occur as the result as well. Additionally, the FDA has listed the following as other vaginal mesh complications: bleeding, infection, Dyspareunia, reoccurrence of prolapse, urinary problems, organ perforation, severe pain, emotional problems, and neuro-muscular damage. Alarmingly, the number of mesh injuries continues to grow as they are still being reported through the FDA's safety reporting program MedWatch.
